How safe is it to visit Egypt right now?

Egypt remains one of the most historically rich and culturally captivating destinations on the planet—and yes, it’s safe for tourists in most areas. Cities like Cairo, Luxor, Aswan, and the Red Sea resorts are well-patrolled and tourist-friendly. As with any international travel, it’s wise to stay updated on official advisories and travel smart.

Yes, they can—and many do! Solo female travelers often find Egypt to be a rewarding and unforgettable destination. Like in many parts of the world, modest attire and situational awareness go a long way. Connecting with female-led tours or trusted local guides can also enrich your journey while adding peace of mind.

A quick check-in with your healthcare provider is the best move before you pack. Typically, travelers are advised to be up to date on routine vaccines and may be recommended Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, and Typhoid vaccines. Egypt is generally low-risk, but it’s smart to pack sun protection, hydration tablets, and a basic travel health kit.

We recommend sticking with bottled or filtered water during your stay in Egypt. While locals may be accustomed to the tap water, it can be tough on tourists’ stomachs. Bottled water is affordable, widely available, and ensures you stay energized for all the sightseeing!

Absolutely—it’s a highlight of the experience! Egyptian street food is delicious, authentic, and budget-friendly. For the best bites, choose stalls that are busy and appear clean. Start with well-cooked items, and your tastebuds (and tummy) will thank you.

What currency is used in Egypt, and are credit cards widely accepted?
Egypt uses the Egyptian Pound (EGP), and it’s best to carry some cash for small purchases, markets, and tipping. That said, major hotels, upscale restaurants, and larger shops in cities accept credit and debit cards—Visa and Mastercard are most common. Just be sure to notify your bank before you travel, and carry some Egyptian Pounds for smoother day-to-day exploring. Here is an updated XE Currency Converter. XE Currency Converter.

Local SIM or international roaming—what’s better for staying connected in Egypt?
If you’re staying more than a couple of days, getting a local SIM card is usually the smartest move. Providers like Vodafone, Orange, and Etisalat offer solid coverage and affordable data packages across major cities and tourist spots. Prefer to set things up before you land? Consider digital eSIM options like HOLAFLY or AIRALO, which let you activate data plans instantly—no need to swap physical SIMs or search for local stores.

When’s the best time to visit Egypt, and what’s the weather like?

The ideal time to explore Egypt is from October to April, when the weather is pleasantly mild—perfect for sightseeing, Nile cruises, or desert adventures. Summers (especially June to August) can be scorching, particularly in Upper Egypt and desert regions, though coastal areas like the Red Sea remain breezy and refreshing. Egypt generally enjoys a dry, sunny climate year-round, so pack light, breathable clothing and don’t forget sun protection no matter when you go!

For the latest weather updates, you can check AccuWeather’s Cairo forecast.

To enjoy the Pyramids and other major attractions with fewer people around, consider visiting during the early morning hours or later in the afternoon. Booking a guided tour with Half Moon Travel and our skip-the-line access is another excellent option. This strategy not only minimizes waiting times but also ensures you get insightful commentary while avoiding the busiest periods.

Navigating Cairo and Alexandria can be simple with a few reliable options. Many visitors find that taxis and ride-sharing services offer convenient and efficient transportation. Public transit, such as metro lines and buses, can also be a good choice for a more local experience.

To keep your travels comfortable, Half Moon Travel offers door-to-door pick-up and drop-off services, and if you prefer extra ease, we can arrange a dedicated driver for the duration of your stay—so you can explore Egypt in cool, convenient style, no matter the season.

Etiquette & Interactions:

Egypt is a blend of modern life and deep-rooted traditions, so dressing modestly is both respectful and practical—especially when visiting mosques, temples, or local neighborhoods. For women, lightweight clothing that covers shoulders and knees is ideal, while men are generally fine in trousers or longer shorts and shirts. In coastal resorts, the dress code is more relaxed, especially at beaches and hotels.

At Half Moon Travel, we’re happy to give you personalized tips on what to pack based on your itinerary—so you can stay cool, confident, and culturally in tune.

Is tipping common in Egypt?
Yes, tipping (known as “baksheesh”) is widely practiced and appreciated in Egypt. While it’s not mandatory, it’s expected for good service, whether in restaurants, hotels, or for guides and drivers. Typically, 10-15% in restaurants is a good guideline, but small tips for porters, housekeepers, and other service providers are also welcomed.

Is it customary to haggle in markets and shops?
Absolutely! Bargaining is a part of the fun when shopping in Egypt, especially in markets like Cairo’s Khan El Khalili or local souks. It’s expected and adds to the experience. Start with a friendly offer, and don’t be afraid to negotiate to get a fair price. Just remember, it’s all in good spirit—so keep the conversation light and respectful.

What are the local customs and etiquette I should know?
Egyptians are known for their warmth and hospitality, but there are a few cultural norms to keep in mind. Always greet with a smile, and be respectful when entering religious sites—women may need to cover their heads in mosques. It’s polite to use your right hand when giving or receiving gifts, and avoid public displays of affection. When dining, try to wait for your host to begin eating before you do. And, of course, tipping goes a long way in showing appreciation for good service!

Can I take photos at historical sites in Egypt?
Photography is usually allowed at most outdoor historical sites, but some locations—especially museums and tombs—have specific restrictions. Flash photography is often prohibited to preserve delicate surfaces, and in some places, a small photography fee or permit is required. Always look for posted signs or ask your guide before snapping away. Half Moon Travel guides are well-versed in site-specific rules and will help ensure you get the best (and permitted!) shots.

What languages are spoken in Egypt?
Arabic is the official language of Egypt, and you’ll hear Egyptian Arabic spoken widely. That said, English is commonly used in tourist areas, hotels, and shops, especially in cities like Cairo and along the Red Sea coast. Many Egyptians in the tourism sector are multilingual, and at Half Moon Travel, our team is fluent in English and happy to assist with any translation needs during your trip.

Half Moon Travel organizes trips in Egypt for groups of all kinds. Whether you’re traveling with family, friends, a school group, or colleagues, we’re here to set up a getaway that creates lasting memories.
